US 17 Washington Bypass

Project Highlights

To minimize disturbance to the surrounding wetlands environment, specialized erection equipment was designed specifically for this project to provide span-by-span top-down construction.  The proprietary technique will use a single piece of equipment to drives piles, erects pier caps, erect girders and self-launch over the completed spans.  All material delivery and access will be over the completed spans.

Our Role

McNary Bergeron and Associates is providing peer reviews of the erection gantry design and structure loads during construction, and assisting with the development of the erection manual.

Construction Method and Specifications

  • Pre-cast 30”x30” concrete piles driven with erection gantry

  • Pre-cast post-tensioned pier caps and pre-cast pre-stressed 120' long concrete bulb-T girders erected using span-by-span top-down technique

  • 72' wide, 6-lane cast-in-place concrete deck

  • 2.8 miles long with 123 spans
