Bridges to Prosperity is a volunteer based charity specializing in the construction of footbridges in the developing world. While the organization has constructed numerous suspended bridges in Africa and South America, a need existed for a structure type that could be used in flat terrain. Jeremy Johannesen has been leading the effort to create a standardized suspension design for this purpose. The prototype structure is being constructed in the village of LaBorrera, Honduras. Crossing the river by foot is un-safe for six months of the year and sometimes impossible. While the site had been chosen as a worthy candidate prior to hurricane Felix, the storm underscored the need for a bridge when the stream rose to 10 ft in depth. The new bridge will span 51m and provide a 1m wide deck for foot and animal traffic. Jeremy will make the first site visit in November of 2007, to layout the foundations. The local residents will perform the work of excavating and casting the concrete footings and anchorages, and the bridge sponsor, Ross Construction of Palo Alto, CA, will be heading up the superstructure construction. The bridge is scheduled for completion in March of 2008. |
